Excellent quality part(16-10-2009)
These are my favorite mag catch to work with. So far they have been completely "drop in" with no fitting issues. Internal locks surfaces are also nicely done so the mag catch works very smoothly. I can easily recommend this part.
Very gritty(22-04-2011)
Ordered Ed Brown mag catch and it's gritty as heck. I have polished the edges and bore but no help. Ordered Wilson Extended release to compare and it's smooth as silk. Brown release is going in junk drawer.
Great drop in part(17-01-2012)
Looks very similar to stock Colt part, and dropped right in to my Government Model. Similar to the original magazine release on this pistol, mags would not go in smoothly at first. I had to put some grease on the catch and insert/remove the stock magazine about 50 times to "break in" the catch. It drops mags easily.
Perfectly precise fitment to frame(03-06-2013)
I have used two of these now. One on a SAM Elite 1911 and one on a RIA 1911A1 Compact. Both drop straight into the frame, very snug, but also protrude from the frame on the right side when installed. I used a proper good flat file to remove the excess protrusion and fit them flush to the frame. The finish when filed is a clean machined look.
Doesn't work well in Springfield (27-11-2016)
My son shoots USPSA and needed a new mag release since he wore his down completely. The grooves for this are too deep for his Springfield Range officer, so when he pushes the mag release in completely, it gets stuck there! Not good for a competitive shooter
I should have read previous reviews(30-09-2018)
Magazine will go only about halfway into gun when inserted. When mag. release was then depressed, magazines would then go all the way in. Same problem as others reported... gritty, rough mag. release. Tried two of these in three new high-end frames; swapping around led to same problem with all combinations. Both mag. releases returned to Brownells. (Surprising result for me since I've used many other Ed Brown parts on other 1911 builds with no glitches whatsoever.)
pretty, but poor design(12-07-2010)
Great looking part, but it doesn't work as advertised. The notch for the "mag catch lock" is cut too deep, allowing the lock to travel past the catch's disassembly slot. Why does that matter? Because the depth of that slot is what controls the travel of the mag catch in the pistol. With this too-deep notch, the mag catch can be pressed completely "flush" with the left side of the frame. More importantly, this catch "over-travel" will cause the mag catch to bind on a magazine, if the button is fully depressed. I called Ed Brown's tech line and was informed that all of their mag catches have this extra-deep notch, so they will ALL work in this same manner. As always, Caveat Emptor...
great part(14-10-2010)
Fit very well, no rough edges, not too extended.
Been using 1911's since 1966(18-10-2010)
I have always preferred the mildly extended Mag release because I have a large hand and short chubby fingers.
I have been using the Ed Brown version since Ed first offered it. Rock solid, works, and I specify it in all my custom builds.
I am down to only 21 1911's right now. Every one of them have the Ed Brown Mag release.
I have a Springfield Professional. When I got it I immediately finished it with an Ed Brown extended Magazine release. A long with a few other parts, of my preference.
I have been shooting for 56 years and carrying for business since 1966. I am very particular about how I like my 1911's set up, and which parts I prefer.
extended mag catch(14-02-2013)
This fit right into my Colt Wiley Clapp Gov't model. I had all my fitting tools handy as I have read that a lot of these extended mag catches have to be fitted. I was a little disappointed that I did not have to do any fitting(not really). My Colt and Wilson mags go in smooth, lock in great and drop free with no problem. Highly recommend.
Poor Design, even worse fit.(19-08-2015)
Very poor tolerancing-- Tried using it with several catch locks and springs, but they all bound and stuck internally. I was able to smooth it out some to achieve some functionality. But when I did, the design of the catch is such that it can push through too far and bind on the magazine you're trying to eject. Sometimes it will even stick and not let go.
Nice finish, not so much function.(19-10-2015)
Love the checkering and the finish on this part. However, as others have pointed out the button can be pushed too far pinning the mag by the release. Not super smooth compared to others I've tried. Mine will require quite a bit of fitting. The mag only inserts half way before getting caught by the mag catch. Partially pushing the mag release will allow the mag to be fully inserted or slamming the mag hard. Some fitting should fix this.
I have a Wilson extended as well and it's much smoother, but still requires some fitting to allow the mag to be smoothly inserted. The Wilson wins this one. Function over looks.
If the over travel on the EB was eliminated I would probably put in the time to properly fit it.
