Finally, Some one got it right!!! (17-01-2015)
I own several makes of 1911/ 22lr conversions and this mag runs perfect in all of them ! I almost gave up trying to find one mag that would run in my Marvel, Advantage Arms, Tactical Solutions, and Kimber conversions, but this one works in all of them. It even locks back the slide every time on last round fired in my Marvel and Tac/Sol top ends. It is of very high quality, and will drop free in tight frames. I have fired thousands of rounds in competition with these and have yet to have a failure to feed. As for the polymer construction, the more you use them the slicker they get, no signs of wear at all so far. Got the first one as a gift at a major match, and after putting it through exhaustive testing, I have purchased 2 dozen more and trashed all the others I've tried in frustration. Great product!
Works well(11-03-2015)
Fed my Nighthawk and Colt 1911 conversion kits flawlessly, and locked back the slide after the last round - every time. Even though this magazine is not advertised as compatible with the Colt "floating chamber" conversion kit, it works well in mine. There was some interference but cycling the slide several times showed less than 1/32" of displaced polymer on the top rear of the magazine. After cycling on an empty magazine several times the interference went away and it worked without failure at the range. There was no interference with the ejector whatsoever. Worked well with my speed loaders as well, though the spring in this magazine is stronger than the one in the GSG magazines I had been using.
Overall very pleased with this magazine, especially at this price point.
Finally! A reliable, low cost magazine (21-03-2015)
Worked flawlessly in my Marvel conversion unit. Fed the CCI Standard Velocity ammo that I use with no jamming. The base pad of the magazine does not fit flush against the bottom of the frame, there is a gap between them. This did not cause any functioning issues. Slow fire, rapid fire and had my friend Dean S. also shooting it to give it a better work out, no issues.
Excellent price and reliability.
Flawlessly Reliable!(20-04-2015)
Finally! A consistently reliable .22 conversion magazine that runs perfectly with a variety of ammunition in my 1911 Marvel, Advantage Arms, and Kimber conversions. One of my top priorities as a competitive shooter is to have reliable, high quality equipment to give me that baseline confidence to build on. And this magazine is all that. The sturdy construction of these magazines also promotes 'pride in ownership'. Clearly, a lot of experienced engineering went into the design! After extensive practice and competition with these robust magazines, I can easily recommend them.
Great Magazine(23-04-2015)
I've compared this side-by-side with another major maker of .22lr mags. The end result is that I sold my other mags and bought more of these. I like the large base pad on the bottom, but the real selling point is the ease with which I can purchase the thumb stud for loading. It is 100% reliable. This is an easy choice.
Inexpensive and Functional(12-06-2015)
I used these magazines with a Kimber and several Ciener 1911 conversions. They feed well with all conversions but the slide locks back only occasionally. The magazine is much longer than necessary for a 10 rounder and extends far past the bottom of the frame when fully inserted. The floor plate is much thicker than needed and looks oddly out of place on a 1911.
The construction and function of this magazine are generally good, hence the 4 stars. The general design and fit, however, are not up to Brownell's usually high standards. If you need a reliable, inexpensive magazine these will do the job, but their appearance leaves something to be desired.
Works good, but does not lock the slide(15-07-2015)
I got this to try with my Advantage Arms 1911 Target conversion kit. It feeds reliably, but does not lock the slide back on the last round. It is easier to load without the tool than the Advantage Arms brand magazine.
Does not work in a Kimber conversion kit(22-07-2015)
I was told by two different Brownell's employees that these magazines not only would work in my Kimber conversion, but that they also would hold the slide open. Neither could be further from the truth. Not only do they not work, the magazine cannot even be seated in the magazine well, even when unloaded and the slide open. I ordered 7 of these magazines and tried each one to make sure it wasn't an isolated problem due to an out of spec magazine. Unfortunately, the problems were consistent with all 7.
Poor quality(29-02-2016)
Poor Quality. Follower consistantly sticks, not pushing next round up.
With a little lub it seems to work better.
Using only for slow fire.
Maybe with 4 or 5 hundred rounds through it will work well enough to try in timed or rapid fire.
Easy to make work with Colt Conv(16-05-2016)
If you are even slightly handy with a file the top right feed lip and top rear plastic can be shaped to work in the old Colt 22 conversion kits. Altered two of them and ran them in a Steel Challenge without issue. Conversion kit was running on a dedicated 1911 carbon frame. Bumping magazine while inserting will indicate where to file on magazine lip. Don't forget the 1/8" diameter tool for feeding magazine.
Will not work in my full size 1911(22-12-2016)
I read the reviews and high hopes for these mags but none of the 4 that I bought would lock in to the magwell of a full size 1911. I then though I would to try and modify the mags slightly as they are only off a very small amount in the distance between the feed lips and the cut for the mag catch, But to no avail removing material from the top of the feed lips resulted in the mag being able to lock in but there not being enough meat left to hold the round securely in place. Enlarging the mag catch slot resulted in the mag locking in also but now due to the mags sitting lower in the frame and the slide will not pick up a round properly. My advice is to avoid these mags at all costs and go with a tried and true brand.
Brownells polymer .22 cal. mags for 1911(11-02-2017)
I purchased 2 of these magazines for a Marvel .22 conversion on a dedicated Caspian receiver. My Colt metal magazines were causing never ending feeding problems and were driving the bullet nose against the chamber nicking the bullet nose and causing flyers at 25 and 50 yards. I was ready to give up on the .22 1911 conversions until I purchased these magazines. All the issues are gone. Magazine lock up is height in the well is good. Followers feed bullet straight into the chamber. Magazine release is smooth and most importantly the slide strips the round cleanly into chamber "without" bullet nose damage. I recommend those magazines for anyone with my setup. We will see how they hold up over time and how Brownells stand behind them should issues arise. Quality and design are well thought out by Brownells.
Kimber conversion incompatible for me (15-04-2017)
First I would like to say that my first order was lost in the mail and Brownells took care of me on replacement. I figured I'd give thanks for their customer service before going onto my not so great product review.
I bought a single magazine to use in a Ruger SR1911CMD-NW with a Kimber Rimfire Target conversion. I cannot comment on how well it works in anything aside from this, as I have not tried. I have also tried only the one magazine.
While the magazine looks to be built OK, when I tried to put it in my pistol, the top of the mag hits the ejector, not allowing the magazine to even lock in to the frame. There is still plenty of magazine sticking out below the pistol, so if I were to try to slam it in to get it to lock into place, I fear that I would damage my ejector. If I remove the slide (hence also the barrel with ejector attached), the magazine locks into the pistol frame just fine. The magazine appears to push the slide stop up if in the frame. When I held magazine in which slide on, it did not appear to push the slide stop up. One does not want this feature on the Kimber to begin with. I haven't confirmed it yet, but feel that the magazine sits too high when locked in and may be made to work by extending mag catch slot to so magazine locks in lower in frame. Again, that would not prevent one from slamming magazine hard into ejector. I do not think I would modify top of magazine.
While many reviewers like the fact that you can put a pin through mag follower to aid in loading, I have not tried as I cannot even get empty mag in pistol. I have not seen a need on the easy to load Kimber magazines anyway.
I haven't decided if I will try to make magazine work or simply return it. Fortunately, Brownells also sells Kimber magazines.
I have a Colt service model Ace conversion. It is on a dedicated Caspian Receiver. I built this in 1994. I tried several brands of replacement magazines. All to no avail. Waste of money. I broke down and purchased a few Colt magazines. Very expensive, but they work. Well I purchased the Brownells 1911 magazine as a last ditch effort. I really love this pistol. But the magazines are difficult to load.
I attempted to use the magazine as delivered. No go. But after comparing the Colt to the Brownells magazine the Ace is thinner at the top. A few minutes with a file and walla. It fit and functions flawlessly.
I will be purchasing several more int he near future.
