It worked okay(06-03-2012)
I bought this with the intention to install a few AR15 A2 front sight blocks. I thought the handle was a nice feature. I drilled the taper pin holes and then tried to ream it to final dimension. After turning several times, the handle loosened.
I ended chucking the reamer itself into a drill press and used slow RPMs to finish the job. The nice thing was the reamer has spriral flutes so it's suitable to use in a drill press rather than a straight flute. It's my understanding straight flutes are for hand reaming while spiral cut flutes work better on a machine. I found that out after I had backordered this reamer.
I could have bought an 0/2 reamer from another tool source for a few bucks less but this was included in another order of mine. Brownells should consider selling the reamer without the handle because it will probably come loose after 1-2 jobs. The reamer would work better with a tap handle IMHO., hence three stars.
Reamer worked, handle didn't(20-04-2012)
The Reamer works great for the taper pins in the front sight base. I use the recommended drill bit size in the Q and A section. The handle work OK, but it really speed up the process using it in a cordless drill when it came out of the handle. Three stars was due to the handle. 5 stars would be accurate for the reamer alone.
Not well made(08-05-2013)
Brownells, I love you, but this product is subpar. The plastic handle slips off the metal with the slightest bit of resistance. Totally ineffective for something that's supposed to ream metal.
Have a tap handel ready if you buy this.(12-05-2013)
The handel will seperate from the reamer in a couple turns. chuck it up in a tap handel and you are good to go, or just buy a reamer without a handel and save some money.
Mission not accomplished(08-07-2013)
This type of tool is a great idea, however this one falls short and has several flaws. The handle loosened after a few turns and had to be discarded. The tool was eventually chucked in a drill press, as the flutes were found to be not efficient for hand reaming. Nothing worse then ordering a special tool for a job then finding out it is not effective. Better off just buying a 2/0 reamer from the local tool supply.
Why is this the only option on Brownells(09-04-2014)
This reamer is cheaply made. The handle is useless. It just makes the picture of the tool on the website look more user friendly. The reamer broke before I finished the taper. You may have more luck with yours but no one in their right mind would claim this tool could install more than one sight block.
No need for the handle(24-04-2014)
As other have mentioned, put it in a vise and pull off the handle and you should be ok. Ideal is putting a tap handle after popping off the plastic one, but I did get the job done with some vise grips. Used this to install an oversized taper pin.
Decent last resort(29-06-2014)
The reamer itself is decent. As stated by others the handle WILL break off but can be chucked in a press and used. If you can find a 2/0 reamer locally or online get that instead, but does work in a press once the handle is gone.
Bad experience(25-10-2014)
Brock almost immediately. After receiving it I thought it would. But I tried it anyway. Did not even get 1 full use out of it. I was not that hard on it. I am returning for a refund. I would look for another option, this one is not a deal.
Taper Pin Reamer(13-02-2015)
Checked "Right Tool" in the "Pros" column, because it is the correct size and shape for AR Taper Pin holes. Remove and throw the plastic handle away, replace with a "T" handle or better to chuck in drill press in order to get enough pressure to cut the correct taper for front sight pins. Installed two AR front sights, not sure the tool will hold up long enough to do a third.
Useless Handle(20-03-2017)
Before you start, grab some light leather gloves. As quickly as possible, get the reamer stuck so that the handle will start to rotate without moving the reamer. Now turn the handle quickly to heat it up and then pull the handle off. Now use a tap handle and the reamer will work fine. If you don't use the glove, you will quickly get a blister because not only is the handle useless, it won't fit the human hand.
Works very well(16-07-2017)
The handle is small (about ~5/8" dia.) and not useable, so I took it off. Very easy to do, put the cutting part in a vise and a vise-grip on the plastic, turn a couple times and it comes right off.>>>
The cutting part of the tool is reverse "threaded", so keep that in mind when using a drill.>>>
USE CUTTING OIL! And take your time, don't build up excess heat. I didn't use a front sight fixture (used the gas tube, fingers, and constant Mk. I eyeball checking to maintain alignment) so it took about 40 minutes to have the first pin installed, which held the alignment for the 20 minutes to install the second pin.>>>
Front sight is dead-on straight, no canting or looseness. Reamer is still good for more reaming, just as sharp as when I first got it. Yes, I'd buy it again when this one wears out.
